Feather and down: characteristics

Here are some of the distinctive features, characteristics and strengths of feather and down:

  • thermal power, the ability to retain heat;

  • hygroscopicity, the ability to maintain a balanced humidity rate with respect to the environment, also allowing a partial absorption of external humidity and a waterproof condition;

  • insulation, the ability to isolate with respect to the outside.

  • resilience, the ability to oppose a high degree of resistance to external agents.

  • filling power, in the case of down, after a pressure equal to 80,000 times the weight of a flake, the latter takes back its original shape.

  • lightness, which in the duvet and small feather also becomes softness.
